Student Corner - Sahana Kumar
This summer, Kirthana Warrier, Sarika Rajan, and I came together to perform a full Bharatanatyam repertoire on August 17th at the Saratoga Civic Theater to raise funds for USKids4Water, a non-profit organization, where I have been volunteering for the past six years. Through our program, Sanmargam, we supported the Books Beyond Borders project, which aims to bring technology, language learning, and creativity to rural students.
We spent the summer practicing for this 90-minute-long margam, creating formations for our group items, having fun, and learning a lot. Smt.Roopa Suresh helped choreograph a beautiful sanchari in the varnam, and along with Guru Smt. Shreelata Suresh and Chetna Natarajan gave us valuable input. We are grateful to our teachers Smt. Shreelata Suresh and Smt. Roopa Suresh, our pillars of support backstage, Smt. Dharshana Eswaran, for her brilliant lighting, and VSDA student Lasya Ram for being our wonderful host that evening.
The event, attended by more than 150 people, helped us raise over $3200 for the cause. It was an incredibly moving experience for me because I used my passion for dance to support a cause that deeply resonated with me. Every step on stage felt meaningful because I knew that our work could inspire kids to pursue their dreams, break down barriers, and discover new opportunities. We hope to continue giving to the community through more such endeavours.
Warmly,
Sahana Kumar
Navaratri Celebrations
NavaNrithyā – Nine Dance Offerings
Navaratri is a celebration honoring the divine energy of Goddesses Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati. This festival always brings the VSDA community together, sharing traditions, art, dance, and music with devotion.
This year, our online series “NavaNrithyā – Nine Dance Offerings” invited you to experience nine evenings of soulful Bharatanatyam performances. Every day, one of our teachers shared a composition dedicated to the Divine Feminine in her many forms. From the fierce Durga to the radiant Lakshmi and the serene Saraswati, they depicted her attributes through music, movement, and emotion.
Navaratri Performances
It was an honor for our Academy dancers to participate in the Navarathi Natyaseva performances at various Bay Area temples, including the Sanatana Dharma Kendra, Kanchi Kamakoti Seva Foundation, and Sri Raja Rajeshwari Temple.
VSDA Golu Gatherings
Golu, the traditional display of dolls, symbolizes divine presence, knowledge, art, and devotion, and was at the heart of our recent meet-ups at student and teacher homes. It was wonderful to see everyone sharing stories and enjoying delicious food, great company, and warm conversations.
We are grateful for the warmth and hospitality that made these get-togethers so special. Looking forward to the next gathering!
Vijayadashami
This Vijayadashami, we honored the pursuit of knowledge, the arts, and the spirit of learning that unites us all. For our students, the occasion served as both a cultural festival and a meaningful reminder that every step in Bharatanatyam - whether a first, a continuation of training, or a return after a pause- belongs to a lifelong journey and a cherished tradition.
